The Work We Do
While AMA supports dozens of Muslim-led organizations across the state, we also lead our own programs and initiatives to serve the community.
Here are a few of our major projects:
Here are a few of our major projects:
Celebrate Unity: Inspiring speakers and community leaders come together for this annual leadership event to learn about the work of AMA organizations and network with a diverse group of leaders. Leader of the Year and Organization of the Year are also announced. This year we are very excited to invite local elected officials.
Muslim Day at the Capitol: Since 2019, AMA, CAIR-AZ, and other civic engagement member organizations have gathered at the Arizona Capitol to advocate for the Muslim community and learn more about the legislative process. This display of unity helps move our community from the margins to the mainstream.
Mosque Open House: A long-held event for Arizona mosques, Mosque Open House Day gives the larger community an opportunity to tour local mosques, meet Muslims, and learn about the Islamic faith. AMA's role is to collaborate with member mosques on creating an effective, well-attended event. AMA helps members reach out to media, police departments, educational organizations, interfaith groups, churches, synagogues, and more.
Quarterly Visiting Scholar Program: The quarterly visiting scholar program (QVSP) invites renowned speakers and scholars from across the United States to visit our masajid. Since 2019 we’ve brought in speakers such as Sha. Muslema Purmul, Sh. Omar Suleiman, and Sh. AbdulNasir Jangda. We look forward to bringing Sh. Yaser Birjas in November 2022.
Zakat Database: This AMA initiative creates a uniform online zakat application for mosques and other zakat-gathering organizations to use. The database helps ensure that those in need get access to funds and reduces fraud and unequal distribution issues.
Community Calendar: This AMA online initiative allows the Muslim community across Arizona to advertise their events, improve collaboration and avoid hosting multiple events on the same day. It’s also a good resource for Muslim families, professionals and media outlets to see what's happening.
Khateeb & Speakers Database: Many small mosques don’t have full-time imams, access to khateebs, or speakers. In response to this issue, AMA is creating an online database where members can search and book khateebs and local speakers to benefit their congregation.
Refugee Task Force:
RTF's initiatives focus on ways to best help transition incoming refugees into our community. We raise awareness, organize volunteers, host community-wide drives, and raise funds from within our state-wide networks, to address the needs of these displaced families.
